Story of Chelsea?s Ship?s Bell
In 1900, Chelsea?s first ?ship?s bell? was developed and also received a patent. However, the concept of a ?ship?s bell? was not new to this clock maker. Mariners all over the world had been using a unique system of bell chimes to tell time at sea, simply because the system as highly practical. The code itself follows the same routine that the ship workers used to pace their workdays. Each day was broken up into six four-hour long periods of time. The bells would add one chime every ½ hour. Once it strikes 8 bells, the shift changes and the bells start again at 1 chime. Here’s a short clip of how the Ship’s Bell clock sounds: Chelsea?s early ship bell clock is not only a fine example of a clock that keeps with this tradition, it is also made with a high level of craftsmanship and a superb attention to detail.
