How to Get Her Ring Size Without Her Knowing
Part of the fun of proposing to your loved one is the element of surprise, and a big part of the proposal is the engagement ring. Not only do you need to find a style that she?ll love, but you?ll also need to know her ring size. If you happen to shop at a store or two for ideas together, make sure she gets her ring finger sized. If you are doing this without her, you?ll have to figure out her size on your own. How do you figure out her size without her knowing? Here are some tips: Go Through Her Jewelry If you?re not afraid of getting caught, you might want to go through her jewelry box to see if you can find her size. However, this strategy only really works if you know which hand and finger she wears her rings on. If she normally wears her class ring on her right hand, chances are pretty good that it won?t be the right size. We once had someone bring a ring in to our store, swearing that it was the size her engagement ring would be. As it turns out, she wore the ring on her thumb! The end result was that the ring was way too big. Estimate Her Size An average finger size is between a 6 and 7, so we can estimate based on what you know about her hands. If she has smaller hands, she can be smaller than that. Also keep in mind that the right hand is generally about a half a size larger than the left if she?s right-handed. So if you find a ring that she wears on the ring finger on her right hand, you will want to get the ring about a half size smaller. (This is not as consistent for a lefty.) If you?re unable to find a ring to use as an example when you come to see us, observe her hands as best as you can so that we can help you make some rough estimates. Understand That Ring Style Matters Depending on the style of ring you choose, her ring size could differ. So, if you happen to find out that a particular ring she wears is a size 7 but has a wider band, she?ll need a 6 or a 6 ½ for a narrow engagement ring on her left ring finger. Also, if you find a narrow ring that?s a size 6 but you want to buy her an engagement ring with a wider band, we?ll need to go up at least a half a size. Try On Her Rings If you find the right ring to use for sizing, but can?t find a way to bring it to us, try it on instead! By remembering where the ring falls on your own hand, we?ll be able to approximate her ring size. We had one customer mark a line on his finger on either side of the ring. From there, we measured between the lines and were able to determine her size. Understand that no matter how hard you try, you may not be able to get it right. Don?t worry! We actually assume it will be wrong, and we don’t charge to make it right. Many people actually will err a little bigger, for the fear of having the ring be too small – too big at least will still go on the hand. It is easy to have the ring sized after she says yes – often within a day. As long as you?re able to get close, you’re good. And to be frank, even if she gets measured at a jewelry store, it still could be off. And, sometimes a ring might seem perfect in the beginning, but as she wears it it might need to be changed. To sum up, there are ways to get a close fit without her knowing, but don’t stress too much about it! Resizing a ring is a simple and fast process.
